As a music teacher, it is my belief that all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status, physical or intellectual ability, should be offered the opportunity to discover and explore their innate potential as musicians, and to increase these natural capacities through formal music instruction.

Action Research

Summary of Findings

My action research that I wanted to look more closely at was "What happens when I place the consequences of the behavior back on the student," with an emphasis on not making the behavioral problem a personal issue and allowing he student to find a solution.

I read several articles and book excerpts and found ten sources I felt coincided with my research. One particular source I was drawn to the method of Love and Logic. I discussed this method with my colleagues and professors and how I can use these resources to guide my research. I found reading through my sources and discussing my findings with others was very helpful. I was able to gain different perspective as well as a better understanding of what to do in my own classroom.

I feel that students who demonstrate negative behavior should be held responsible for their actions. I found that if I design a solution with the student's input, the behavior tends to improve in a positive manner than lasts longer than disciplinary action would. As I taught in my Lead's classroom, I tried to implement the suggested ideas from my sources. Some of these strategies were very effective while others did not procure the expected successful results.

I think this assignment was great practice for actively knowing your students as well as understanding the procedure of thesis research. After researching and testing out multiple strategies, I feel i am better prepared for my own classroom to focus on the positive things that my students are doing to and to implement procedures that will make them and the class successful for great learning to take place.

A little bit about me...

My name is Margaret Tolman and I thank you for taking the time to view my portfolio.

I am currently completing my student teaching in the Caldwell School District at Jefferson and Syringa Middle Schools in the choral program. In my first semester I was given the unique opportunity to work in an elementary classroom at Van Buren Elementary. Spending a full year as a student teacher has given me a better understanding and has prepared me more entirely to take on the position of a teacher. Seeing the students on a day to day basis helped learn more about them and the many ways I can teach them.  I was able to see their progress on a daily basis and help them grow along the way. My experience was not limited to the classroom as I participated in Orff conferences as well as meeting and building relationships with my students' parents which as a teacher it is a very valuable thing to have.

As this school year comes to an end, I am very excited to join the community of Central Canyon Elementary as the new Music teacher.

Resume

"Music enhances the education of our children by helping them to make connections and broadening the depth with which they think and feel. If we are to hope for a society of culturally literate people, music must be a vital part of our children's education."
