Artifact 1

1C.  Setting Instructional Outcomes

Best Day of My Life - Body Percussion

The artifact I chose to demonstrate my ability to set instructional outcomes was a body percussion activity I learned at a recent Orff conference. I chose the PowerPoint I created to be performed with the karaoke of Best Day of My Life by the American Authors.  The assessment I used for this lesson was both visual and verbal: I listened to hear that everyone was both "saying" and "doing" as well as participating by watching the board and doing the corresponding movements.  My instructional outcome will provide a stronger sense of rhythmic beat and understanding of how to sightread music. I will keep this in their repertoire so that they can continue to improve their skills.

This artifact demonstrates my understanding of instructional outcomes for planning and preparation by having clear goals and used sequencing and scaffolding to teach each section. Using a whole class activity and assessment allows students to understand what they are knowledgeable about as well as what they should focus on more.

Artifact 2

1D.  Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources

Two Little Sausages

The artifacts that I chose to demonstrate my knowledge of my resources for planning and preparations would be game I designed using multiple instruments, a song - chant, and rhythm patterns.  I taught this lesson to the Kindergartners and taught them procedures for rotation and instrument technique. Every student was given  the opportunity to use each instrument and sing along through the poem.

The opportunity to play the instruments proved to be a great behavior management method and taught students how to act while using the instruments and when to play.  This artifact reflects my ability to pull from resources as well as composing my own activities.  I think this is lesson was most successful due to the introduction to creating your own music and showing the students what they could use to make new songs.

Artifact 3

1E.  Designing Coherent Instruction

The artifacts that I chose to demonstrate coherent instruction is the lesson that I taught in my first placement. The lesson that I taught to my students dealt with melody and sound movement. I had the students look at a chart with images of apples representing the rhythm pattern. In addition I showed strategically placed images of apples and an apple tree lower or higher than the middle section of the board. Once the students knew the rhythm and  poem, I taught the melody of the song to the students, using solfege to help them understand the movement in the melody further. Once the students are ready, we played a game that went along with the song..

I feel these artifacts demonstrate my understanding of coherent instruction for planning and preparation because being able to approach music in multiple ways is much more effective in learning music than just looking at sheet music or the apple images.  I was able to build the lesson as the students needs became apparent after introducing the lesson. Being able to structure the lesson in different ways helped the students to expand their knowledge and understanding of music.
